Antonio and Rosa became the oldest couple to file for divorce.

Antonio C. (99) and Rosa (96) from Italy are the oldest couple ever who decided to get a divorce, after 77 years of marriage. They have five children, a dozen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild from that period.

Namely, a few days before Christmas 2011, he found letters in an old dusty drawer that changed the course of his life. When he started reading them, he found out that his wife was unfaithful to him, and that she had a lover 60 years ago.

Disappointed and angry, he called her at once. She was crying, she confessed everything, and begged his forgiveness, but it was all in vain.

Antonio and Rosa got married in the 1930s. He was born in Sardinia and was the commander of the Carabinieri in his native city of Naples.

After their story ended in local newspapers, and then more widely, the Italian government revised the divorce proceedings in 2015. They reduced the waiting time for undisputed cases from three years to six months.

“Even today, there are cases that have never existed before, people over the age of 80 are seeking a divorce in order to start a new life. In most cases, Italian women over the age of 65 are looking for a divorce,” states Gian Ettore Gasani, president and founder of the Italian Academy of Marriage Lawyers for the newspaper Il Messaggero.

With this move, Antonio and Rosa became the oldest couple to ever file for divorce, breaking the record of a couple from Great Britain. Bertie and Jesse Wood were a couple who divorced in 2009 after 36 years of marriage. They were both 98 at the time. For her and him, it was a second marriage. Bertie passed away a year after their divorce ended, just before her 99th birthday, reports The Vintage News.
